How to Clean Golden Goose Sneakers Without Losing the Distressing

To clean Golden Goose sneakers, clean only the dirt you added, by hand, with something mild, and leave the factory distressing alone. Golden Goose's own instructions are to keep them out of the washing machine, never soak them, wash them by hand with a mild detergent and let them dry at room temperature. The worn, scuffed look is part of the shoe, and no cleaner should take it off.

Are Golden Goose supposed to look dirty?

Yes, Golden Goose sneakers are meant to look dirty. The product pages describe it as a vintage finish, and the care page says plainly that the distressing "is not a production defect". It tells you to clean real dirt, which it lists as "mud, accidental marks, and unintentional scuffs", and only "on areas not designed to look distressed".

The practical test is simple: if the mark was there when you opened the box, it's the finish. If it turned up after a wet pavement or a crowded bar, it's dirt. A photo of the pair when new settles any argument later. Golden Goose gives no method for cleaning the distressed areas themselves, so don't try.

What a Super-Star is made of

The classic Super-Star has a cow leather upper, a lining of cow leather and cotton, a rubber sole and a suede star on the side. Other versions come in suede, nappa, or with glitter and crystals. Each needs a slightly different hand, and the sections below go through them. Ball Star, Purestar and other models follow the same logic: find the upper on the label and use the matching section.

How to clean Golden Goose shoes at home

  1. Take the laces out. Golden Goose says to wash them by hand with mild soap.
  2. Dust them off. A soft cloth or a soft brush. Golden Goose says to avoid abrasive brushes on smooth leather.
  3. Treat only the new marks. Two pumps of foam on the dirty patch, not the whole shoe. Wait ten seconds, then wipe with a dry cloth. Near the distressed areas, press and lift instead of wiping.
  4. Clean the sole. Golden Goose uses a soft brush and mild detergent. Foam on the rubber sidewall and the brush from our box do the same job.
  5. Dry at room temperature. Paper inside holds the shape. In Golden Goose's words: "Don't use a hair dryer or radiator, as these could damage the adhesive and materials."

Golden Goose asks for "mild, pH-neutral products" on smooth leather and warns against "harsh detergents". SneakerSalt Shoe Cleaning Foam measures pH 7.2 and has no bleach, no solvents and no fragrance. On white leather it rates Excellent in our materials table. On coloured leather, test an inside panel first; it hasn't lifted dye on anything we've tested. What it won't do is remove or restore the distressing. It lifts surface grime, and the vintage finish isn't grime. Our white leather guide has more on telling a scuff from damage.

Suede, white uppers and glitter

  • Suede stars and suede uppers. Golden Goose says to brush "in the direction of the fiber" and to dab water marks without rubbing. Our foam rates "Good, blot only" on suede: one light pump, ten seconds, press a dry cloth on and lift. When cleaning the leather around a suede star, work up to its edge with the cloth, not past it.
  • White uppers. Golden Goose's rule is to "never use household products such as vinegar, toothpaste, bleach, and ammonia". That rules out most whitening hacks you'll find online.
  • Glitter and crystals. Golden Goose says to dab them with a damp microfibre cloth. We haven't tested our foam on glitter or crystals, so keep it off them.

Can Golden Goose go in the washing machine?

No. "Don't put them in the washing machine or soak them in water," is how Golden Goose puts it, and it adds that soaking in hot or cold water "can damage the leather upper". The tumble dryer, the radiator and the hair dryer are all out for the same reason: heat attacks the glue. On this one there is no grey area.

Insoles, creases and storage

Insoles. If the insole lifts out, give it a light pass of foam or wipe it with a cloth barely damp with mild soap and water, and let it dry completely before it goes back. If the smell returns quickly, replace it.

Creases. The folds across the toe are the leather bending, not dirt. No cleaner takes them out, ours included.

Storage. Golden Goose lists storing them in plastic bags among the things to avoid. Keep them somewhere dry, with paper inside if they've just been cleaned.

Questions people actually ask

Does Golden Goose clean shoes for free?

We can't confirm whether Golden Goose offers a cleaning service, free or paid, in London or anywhere else. Ask the boutique you bought from before you send a pair anywhere.

Can you clean Golden Goose so they look brand new?

With Golden Goose, brand new already looks worn. Aim for the pair as it came out of the box: real dirt gone, distressing left exactly where the factory put it.

Does Dawn dish soap help whiten shoes?

No. Dish soap cleans, it doesn't whiten, and strong mixes can discolour some materials. On Golden Goose, stick to the mild detergent the brand asks for, and skip the household whitening tricks it rules out.
